Silvery body, usually with a dark oblique line from corner of the mouth, through eye to the top the head and a straight line from behind eye to tail. Less steep head than S. hippos (Samsonfish) and deeper body than S. lalandi (Yellowtail Kingfish). Dorsal fin lobe equal length to pectoral fin, and anal fin lobe shorter than pectoral fin length. S. rivoliana (Highfin Amberjack) has longer anal and dorsal fin lobes - otherwise nearly identical in appearance.
