Black and white bands of near equal width. Similar D. aruanus (Banded Humbug) lacks black on tail, and Chrysiptera tricincta (Threeband Demoiselle) has white on pelvic fin. Lives in small aggregations above staghorn coral in lagoons, retreating amongst the branches when approached.
