Description
Heavy, dark mottled body, usually with a broad diffuse pale bar vertically on mid body, black margins on dorsal, anal and tail fins, and orange colour in spiny dorsal fin visible if extended. Also distinguished by large size. Small juveniles with 2-3 broad black stripes along body with thin white/yellow stripes in between and a pale belly. Intermediate stages with up to for dark stripes which fade to pale grey before taking on adult colouration.
